After keeping things (almost) quiet leading up to the unveil, Microsoft has officially announced the newest member of its Surface family. The Surface Laptop Go 2 is here for all to see.
And buy.
The sequel to the original Surface Laptop Go from 2020 made headlines earlier this week, after the device was leaked by a retailer in Korea.
It appears that Redmond was planning to lift the veil tomorrow alongside opening up the preorders, but the company seems to have moved things by a day due to the spoiler filled leak. This isn’t such a bad thing, considering this new machine is slated to become available on June 7.
Before we get into the nitty gritty of the hardware, here’s an introduction video:
As the headline above makes clear, the Surface Laptop Go 2 is now slightly more expensive than its predecessor, going up in price by $50 and starting at $599.
But Microsoft compensates for this with better storage — the new model is now offered with 128GB of base storage, instead of the measly 64GB in the original. Also swapped out is the 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor with the newer, 11th generation chip in the form of Intel Core i5-1135G7.
There is also a newer version with 16GB of RAM.
Speaking of newer things, the Surface Laptop Go 2 also ups the sustainability game. While the memory is soldered in and not replaceable, the rest of the components like the SSD, keyboard, trackpad, display, battery, and the Surflink cable are.
Another change is that this budget device now comes in four color options: Ice Blue, Sandstone, Platinum, and the new Sage.
Rounding up the remaining specifications, we have a promise of 13.5 hours of battery life, an improved HD camera that is still sadly 720p, and better thermals designed to make the laptop less noisy. Display is a 3:2 aspect ratio 12.4-inch PixelSense touchscreen with a screen resolution of 1536 x 1024.
Other aspects of the device remain unchanged, like no backlist keyboard and just 4GB of RAM in the base configuration.
In that aspect, this remains a premium designed affordable device that offers uninspiring specifications for undemanding users. Still, a welcome update for a machine that is now two years old, and serves as a budget entry into the Surface ecosystem.
